Electronics get personal: Affordable Gadgets Top everyone's wish list

It shouldn't come as a surprise that consumers spend on personal electronics is at a high of all time. After all, gadgets are getting colder and more accessible. The device regarded as extravagant a few years ago is a must-have today. Here is an overview of some consumer electronics that top everyone's wish list.

Digital camera

In today's digital age, film cameras are an anachronism. Although a few years ago, experts in the field of visa technology digital camera as a computer peripheral instead of a consumer product, the digital camera has caught on like wildfire. And, why not? After all, an amateur photographer filmcard gives virtually unlimited opportunities for taking pictures, review them and know instantly whether or not he or she got shot. With options ranging from point-and-shoot to specialty lighting for, say, eBay, digital cameras have something for everyone. The newer models still have the ability to write high-quality digital video and easily upload on popular sites such as YouTube.

GPS Receivers

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and consists of a number of satellites in Earth orbit. A GPS receiver uses information from the satellites to determine the latitude and longitude on the Earth's surface. Overlay map and other data to provide the user with valuable information such as driving directions, locations of shops, banks and petrol stations and so forth. GPS receivers are also extremely popular for the relatively new sport of geocaching, where they are used to find hidden containers in certain longitudes and latitudes.

Video game consoles

When it comes to video games, the numbers are staggering. The video game industry brings more money per year than the movie industry. It's no wonder, then, that video game consoles are some of the hottest commodity around. The PlayStation2 is still going strong, while the Xbox 360 made history with the stupendous success of newly released Halo 3 game.

But perhaps the most revolutionary of all console is the Wii console. With the Wii, gaming is no longer passive. The controller and nunchuk allows players to physically become part of the action and the Wii welcomes players in an online community where they can build their own avatars, participate in surveys, and much more. In addition, the Wii is a fully functional Web browser!

Mobile phones and accessories

It is an understatement to say that cell phones are ubiquitous. If you're on the subway, in a bookstore, or driving in a car, chances are good that you're talking on a cell phone or listening to someone else's conversation. Now that we are always in touch, accessories such as a Bluetooth headset are almost a necessity. Wireless connectivity is more secure and convenient, and a Bluetooth headset is like a fashion accessory.

Shop Online

The best news about personal electronics is that, if you're looking for a digital camera or a laser printer, you can buy it online with a few clicks of the mouse. There are wonderful shops counter electronic online that carry everything you could wish for-incredibly accessible prices. The only question that remains is, the new device is due to hit stores next?

How To Choose A Barcode Scanner?

Barcode scanners are light emitting devices that are used to read barcodes. Usually attached to a computer or laptop via PS2 or RS-232, the data collected is stored on a computer for processing or storage. It is now used in many different industries such as retail or production.

They have been on the market for many years now with new versions of barcode scanners available every year. The prices can vary from as low as $50.00 to as high as several thousand dollars. So how do you pick a good barcode scanner?

To answer that question, it is important you know there are 2 major classes of barcode scanners, image-based and laser-based. Image-based barcode scanners use a camera usually embedded in a barcode scanner. The camera will capture the images and then processed by complex image techniques to decode the barcodes. Laser-based barcode scanners uses mirrors and lenses to read the barcodes.

Laser barcode scanners are usually more expensive than image-based scanners. They have their own pros and cons. An image-based barcode scanner do not have internal movable parts therefore are more resistant to drops or knocks than laser barcode scanners. Also, image-based barcode scanners have a shorter scanning distance (4 to 10 inches) compared to laser barcode scanners. On the other hand, laser scanners are more prone to wear and tear due to their lenses. They not only have a longer scanning distance (up to 24 inches) but also are able to scan from a wider angle from the barcode.

Be aware that the scanning distance for both image-based and laser barcode scanners have already improved dramatically over the years and I wouldn’t be surprised if a barcode manufacturer claims an image-based scanner has a scanning distance of 24 inches.

Here are some questions you need to ask yourself before getting a barcode scanner. The size of scanner required? Type of environment the barcode scanner will be using (outdoors, shop, warehouse)? The scanning distance required? Are they to be used hands free or hand-held? Your budget?

So my suggestion is if you need a barcode scanner for long range scanning, get a laser barcode scanner. For short range scanning, use an image-based barcode scanner such as a CCD barcode scanner. The environment as I asked earlier also plays an important part. If the barcode scanner is being used outdoors or in rugged environments where it is expected to take a drop or knock or two, then it is best to get an image-based barcode scanner. If it were for example being used in a retail shop, then a laser barcode scanner would be the best choice.

There are such a wide variety of barcode scanners available that I just can’t explain completely in this article. If you are in doubt, consult the barcode manufacturers such as symbol or metrologic who have sales consultants who are able to do an analysis of the type of barcode scanners needed by your business.

First of all, you must decide what type of camera will meet your needs. You may only need a simple point and shoot for family photos. These cameras will be less expensive and uncomplicated to operate. You can get automatic actions such as zoom and flash or automatic advancement in 35mm cameras. They are usually compact and simple to use, which makes it easy for anyone to take pictures.

However, there are limitations with those cameras in the control of exposure and focusing. For someone who is more involved in amateur photography, added manual control may be beneficial. One of the biggest advantages is the ability to change lenses to get a better zoom picture. Sporting events and vacation photos will be more pleasing to look at when taken with the right types of lenses.

The serious and professional photographers will want the best cameras with the features that suit their needs. This would include manual focus to give the clearest and sharpest pictures. Also, there are several different size lenses to get a good picture from a greater distance.

The second is the 35mm SLR that allows more variety in lenses and focus. The third is the Medium Format, which is larger and gives a larger negative to work with. It is completely manual but supplies a high-quality photograph. The fourth is the Large Format camera used by the professionals. It is larger and harder to use but provides stunning photographs from the larger size prints.

When you have decided the type of camera you need, you are ready to shop online. To get started, you simply type in your key words on a search engine. They usually offer all the well-known brands such as Leica, Minolta, Canon, Horizon, Contax, Olympus, Mamiya, Nikon, Hasselblad, Pentax, and Noblex.

Some sites sell used products that have been gently used or refurbished. Purchasing these cameras would save you some money and will usually still come with a warranty. How Electronic Air Cleaners Work

Electronic air cleaners clean the air without a filter. Most contain a collection grid to attract the impurities. These must be cleaned regularly. You can purchase these systems to clean one room at a time or have a whole house system installed to keep every room clean.

As the air passes through the machine, it is given an electrical charge. This also charges the impurities in the air. The charged particles are then attracted to an oppositely charged collection grid, which acts as a magnet for the particles. Some have no collection grid. In this case, the particles attach to the walls, floors and furniture in your home. These must be removed by dusting or vacuuming the room.

For the system to work properly, the collection grid must be kept clean. This is easy to do with a damp rag. If your home is very dusty or you have pets, you will need to clean the grid frequently, possibly several times each week. If it isn’t kept clean, the grid will stop attracting the particles and won’t clean the air in your home.

A separate pre filter on the system can help reduce the amount of impurities on the collection grid. The pre filter removes larger particles. This helps reduce the amount of particles that become attached to the collection grid and you won’t need to clean it as often. The pre filter must be changed regularly to keep it working properly. You will have the added expense of purchasing replacement filters.

Types of Electronic Air Cleaners

Whole House Air Cleaners

Whole house air cleaners can be installed on your forced air heating system. You will need to hire a heating contractor to install the system. Whole house systems help clean the air in every room of your home. A large collection grid attracts the impurities in your home. You will need to clean the grid frequently to keep it working properly.

Portable Units

Portable units are sold online or in home appliance stores. These are intended to be used in one area of the home at a time. You can purchase more than one, or move the unit from room to room throughout the day. Products are labelled according to the square footage they cover. Make sure the one you are using is sufficient for the area where it is being used. One that is too small won’t be effective. On the other hand, if it’s too large, you will have a high level of ozone in your house.

Negative Ion Generators

Negative ion generators have no collection grid. The walls, furniture and other surfaces of your home become the collection grid. You will notice a film on your furnishings and may see soot like film on the walls. This will need to be cleaned away by dusting or vacuuming.

Safe Use of Electronic Air Cleaners

This type of air cleaner has come under fire recently, due to the ozone that is produced as a by product of the electrostatic process. Ozone is considered a pollutant and high levels of ozone in the air in your home can be an irritant. It is particularly a problem for people who suffer from asthma or other respiratory or lung disorders.

To reduce the risk associated with ozone, consider running the air cleaner when the room is not in use. For example, run the system in your bedroom in the early evening. Turn it off about an hour or so before you plan to go to sleep. Run the machine in the kitchen or other living areas at night and turn it off first thing in the morning. This will allow the ozone in the air to dissipate before you enter the room.

If your system has a high and low setting, run it on the low setting. If odor is a problem, run it on high when the room is empty and air out the room before you enter it. When the room is occupied, use only the low setting. A separate hepa filtration system can help remove some of the excess ozone in the air.

Home Theatre - What Difference Do Cables Make?

If you go to your local home theater store, you may be confronted by a variety of “extreme” sounding names for cabling: Mega Cables, Monster Cables, Uber Cables… the proliferation of “boutique” cabling is always a source of controversy in home theater and audiophile circles. The question is, how much difference do they make, and are they worth it? Well despite the perils involved in even mentioning this topic, I’m going to attempt to add something to the discussion.

The most important thing to recognize is that a cable cannot improve the sound of a home stereo system any more than an electrical wire can create extra electricity when you plug it into the wall. That’s actually a very good example, because when you’re listening to audio for instance, what we’re hearing is an electronic representation of acoustic sounds – that is to say, the actual sounds have not been captured and stuffed into a compact disc like fireflies in a child’s jar – they have been copied, imitated, and a representation stored on the disc as a series of numbers.

These numbers are then read and translated into electronic signals, which are sent to the speakers in order to approximate the actual sounds. With that in mind, it makes sense that poor quality wires don’t physically change the sound – instead it’s like a game of ‘telephone’, in which the band tells the CD, the CD tells the player, the player tells the wires, and the wires tell the speakers, with something being lost at every step so that the message “Aunt Betty baked a pie” is altered to “Fat Eddy wants to cry” or what should be a great live recording sounds tinny, distant, or otherwise just plain wrong.

A good cable will change the signal as little as possible, but all cables do damage your signal a bit – it’s simply a matter of degree. As far as which cables are the best? That’s up to you or your local audio guru to decide – much is up to personal preference, with the rest probably being left up to your budget to decide.
